Well, it’s time to let everyone know we’re here. Over the next couple days, Three Ten Pictures will be making some very public announcements about the production of our newest feature-length documentary/memoir, “How I Got Over.” The title’s temporary, so don’t knock it yet.
We’ve had a productive week. I had a great meeting this morning with composer Chris Schellenberg, a Beethoven/Handel/Stevie Wonder-level genius who will no doubt create a mind-expanding score for the film.
The music, as I envision it at this point, will be low-key, fascinating, and a little introverted… no big symphonic numbers. I outlined the picture’s four major musical themes for Chris:
1. Me - I need a theme. Chris Schellenberg will compose a symphonic piece to represent me. That’s weird. I said I want something a little depressing. I played the opening piece to Michael Mann’s film ‘Heat,’ then gave him Mahler’s Fifth Symphony to take home. Then I wept. I’m serious. Real tears. I would never lie to you.
2. Pastor Chris Chadwick - I told Schellenberg that Pastor represents perserverance. I want a powerful, quiet theme–like the one John Williams wrote for ‘Saving Private Ryan.’
3. The City of San Diego - A city of refugees, a city seemingly without community… isolated and disconnected, yet claustrophobically overcrowded. I couldn’t think of a piece of music that sounded like what I wanted, but Chris said he’d nail it, and I believe him.
4. Canyon Ridge Baptist Church - The theme here will represent the church body as a place of sanctuary, of security, a place where the protagonists are free to be themselves. I kept repeating, “the church was always there for me during that time of my life.” And that’s what the movie’s about.
The rest of the week will be devoted to marketing, and to the more boring aspects of production: downconverting HD footage, sending emails, booking shoots, etc.
Keep in touch. There’s more to come!

Thanks for the update John. Good to hear things are moving along. The site’s looking good too. I wish I was making films full-time. If things start to become overwhelming just think to yourself “at least I’m not stuck in a cubicle all day”.
