For All Mankind

You need to watch this film.

It’s called “For All Mankind,” and it’s a masterpiece of documentary filmmaking.  It’s also an exhilarating retelling of the Apollo 11 moon landing.

The film is constructed from about 6 million feet of footage (I took that from wikipedia, who said it was quoting the DVD commentary) filmed by NASA and by the astronauts during their journey to the moon.  The majority of it had never been seen publicly.

The filmmakers turned this footage into a single sequence, unbroken by black frames, jump cuts, or talking heads interviews.  It is a stunning montage.

Narration is provided in the form of interviews with the astronauts, who provide poetic, highly entertaining commentary throughout.

It definitely sets the bar for documentary editing.  The editing on my film will be a hack job compared to this.

Enjoy.
